MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE AND DURABILITY OF LC3 CEMENT IN SOCIAL HOUSING USING NON-STANDARDIZED AGGREGATES IN MEXICO

The study evaluates LC3 cement (calcined clay, limestone, and clinker) in social housing in Mexico,
empha-sizing its sustainability and technical performance. Conducted in La Perla, Veracruz, in
collaboration with Holcim and HPH Mexico, LC3 was compared with conventional Portland cements.
Results showed that LC3 achieved mechanical strengths comparable to Portland at 28 days, with
40% lower CO₂ emissions.

OTJI 3.0 READY FOR SERIAL PRODUCTION

Our urine-diverting-dry-toilet bowl Otji 3.0 is now mature for serial production. The design of Otji 3.0 contains the knowledge of over 15 years field-experience all around urine-diverting-dry-toilets (UDDT). The last couple of months we have spent to sharpen precision, functionality and appearance of our new design. Now the prototype of Otji 3.0 is ready for the factory.

Urine-diversion could become a cornerstone of climate-smart, resource-efficient dry sanitation systems. By separating urine at source urine-diversion enables the capture of several nutrients and is therefore increasingly recognized as a promising component towards sustainable agriculture.

But experience has shown that not all UDDT-pedestals did find sufficient support among the community where they were installed. The Otji 3.0 will soon offer a user-friendly, attractive design that could overcome acceptance obstacles and therefore unlock huge opportunities of nutrient recycling.

PARTICIPATORY ECOLOGICAL SANITATION AT "ECOESCUELA KOYAM": A COMMUNITY-LED RESPONSE TO CHILE'S WATER CRISIS

The Araucanía region of Chile, the ancestral homeland of the Mapuche people, is a land of extraordinary natural beauty and cultural richness. It is also a region under severe ecological stress. Despite abundant rainfall, rivers and lakes are chronically contaminated due to the absence of proper wastewater treatment. This water crisis threatens health, biodiversity, and local economies alike.
